Create Playlists on the iPhone

The iPhone provides a way to create playlists directly on the device. If you’re used to creating playlists on your iPod, you’ll find the iOS process familiar. You can create as many playlists as you like on your device.

To create a new playlist, tap the Playlists button at the bottom of the iPod screen, and then tap the Add Playlist entry that appears below Genius Playlist in the Playlists screen. (If you are on an older iPhone or iPod touch, you might see and On-The-Go entry instead.) Tap that, and a New Playlist dialog box opens, where you can name your new playlist. After doing so, select Playlists, Artists, or Songs from the bottom of the screen to choose how you want to locate songs to add.

If you tap Artists, you’ll see a list of all the artists on your device. Tap an artist’s name, and you’ll see a list of all that artist’s albums. Tap an album title, and you’re offered the option to add all songs or choose individual songs to add by tapping on the blue plus sign (+) icon on the right. (If you have just a single album by that artist, no album entry will appear—only the songs on the album will be listed.)

If you tap Songs, you can choose to add all songs or add individual songs. Similarly, if you tap the More button, you can select tracks by Albums, Audiobooks, Compilations, Composers, Genres, Podcasts, or Videos. Just as with the Playlists, Artists, and Songs screens, you can choose everything in the list or individual tracks.

If you tap Playlists, you’ll be presented with a list of all the playlists that are on your device. Select a playlist, and you have the option of adding the entire playlist or selecting individual songs by tapping on the plus sign next to each song’s name.

When you’ve configured your playlist to your liking, tap the Done button in the upper right corner of the screen. When you tap your new playlist in the Playlists screen, you’ll see three gray buttons above the list of songs: Edit, Clear, and Delete. If you scroll up, a Search field will appear.

To edit a playlist, tap the Edit button. Remove individual tracks by tapping on the minus sign (–) to the left of the track you want to delete, and then by tapping on the Delete button that appears. To reorder the playlist, tap and hold on the List icon (three stacked lines) to the right of an entry, and then drag it up or down the playlist. To add tracks, tap the plus sign in the upper left corner of the window and proceed as you did when creating the original list—choosing categories from the bottom of the window and adding playlists, artists, songs, or categories of content from the More screen. To clear the playlist of its contents, go the main screen of your playlist, tap Clear, then tap the red Clear Playlist button. To delete the playlist completely, tap Delete and then tap the red Delete Playlist button.
